Quick question for our readers, fans, and members: What events are you looking forward to in 2010?

Any and all events, big or small - lets hear about them! It can be a show, a meet, a track event... lets hear it!

I’m really interested to hear what events you guys are looking forward to this year! You don’t have to answer just one, and it can be anything automotive related! Track events, car meets, or shows!

Personally, I’m probably going to attend my first Eibach this year, attend Import Alliance (as always), and various other shows in Texas. I’m really looking forward to Import Reactor, a show here in Houston based around an Anime Convention – the atmosphere is super unique!

What about you guys?

Wow, this is golden! If you aren't familiar with Super Silhouette races, they were held as part of the Fuji Grand Championship series between 1979 and 1984 and followed Group 5 Standards. There were very few regulations during this time and cars generally would only share the same basic "Silhouette" as production cars(which is where "Super Silhouette" comes from). What I loved about these cars was how over the top they were! If you've ever wondered where the Bosozoku style originated from, it probably started here as enthusiasts wanted to bring this aggressive styling to their street cars!

This one is fairly well known – the S110 Impul Silvia! Look at those Hoshino Impuls! Beautiful wheels!

The Coca Cola 910 Bluebird Coupe!

Another S110 Silvia.

This is the #3 Impul Silvia – notice the less aggressive aero than the #23 car above.

BMW M1! Crazy to think it shared a track with the rest of these cars!

The famous Tomica DR30 Skyline. What a beautiful and amazing car – I’ll post more about it later!

Not as wild, but I’m still loving this Datsun! Check out the hot pink car in the background!

If you're a little older (or you've got older friends) then you probably remember the glory days of rice. You grew up in the '90s when bodykits, altezzas, and graphics were cool. "The Fast and The Furious" didn't introduce you to anything new - it only confirmed what you've thought was cool for years! Alot of times when I talk to older guys we'll talk about the "good ol' days" and laugh about how silly we were back then. The term rice gets thrown around fondly, almost as if it weren't a bad thing. There is a bit of nostalgia for us.

I thought it'd be fun to throw up some fun throwback images! I'm not asking you to like these cars, but just think back with me and consider where we've been, where we are, and where we're going. Hell, it might make a comeback like bell bottoms did! To be honest, if you look around these days you'll see plenty of classic rice modifications being introduced slowly back into the scene.

Sometimes, I feel like we were better off then. The import world didn’t have nearly as much elitism and styles hadn’t been around long enough to establish themselves or get played out. Forum kids weren’t know-it-alls. Everything hadn’t been done already, there wasn’t hate if you weren’t building your car to everyone else’s approval. It was cool to be different, even if you weren’t quite tasteful when doing it. The import guys were the underdogs and when you saw another guy with a riced out import car you instantly gave him a thumbs up.

Alot of times, I think that the overall themes of cars back then were all over the place. It wasn’t specifically bodykits that ruined cars, and it wasn’t specifically altezzas, and it wasn’t giant tachometers or fart cans. It was the sloppy way we threw it all together. Look, things hadn’t had time to mature back then and you didn’t have alot of selection when it came to parts. When something new came out, you bought it. You shopped at Autozone in “the rice isle” looking for new things to slap on it.

I’ve often wondered if certain aspects of rice could be introduced back into the scene with cleaner builds and better flowing cars. I think we’re at that point now – bodykits and wings are definitely making a come back under the guise of “Time Attack”. Some people feel the need to justify everything they do with performance. When you share the same parts as a high powered all business time attack car, it makes justification that much easier.

Well, here is an interesting re-introduction. Clear tails! I haven’t seen these things in years!

Clean car, great stance, a good set of wheels… and clear tails! I’m not asking you to like the car, but it sure does look better than what you would’ve imagined they would’ve been on in the ’90s. I think it is pretty neat! Props to the previous owner (Sarap of Team 5 Star) who had the guts to throw them on because he liked them. Also, its great to see enthusiasts just hanging out and having a good time. More photos from that day here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/omgodzilla/sets/72157613224535445/

So, its cool when one of our own members gets some appreciation! Congratulations to Chris, aka imacoolkid, for getting featured in the next issue of S3 Magazine! What a super nice guy, with a really dope car. We can't wait to see it in print!

Congratulations to Chris, aka imacoolkid, for getting featured in the next issue of S3 Magazine!

I met Chris at Import Alliance this year in Nashville, Tennessee. Jonathan and Yousef (from S3 Magazine) and I were discussing the car and if it’d be a good fit for the magazine. I thought it was a nice car and really enjoyed the color scheme, so I offered to shoot it. I really wanted to get atleast a single shoot in for S3 while I was out there, just to support those guys. I talked to Chris, and decided we’d shoot after the “Best Engine Bay” contest since it turned out that he had made it into the final judging.

An hour or so later, Chris and I headed down the road a few exits to find a good location to shoot the car. As I started taking photos, I realized all the “little things” Chris had done. The attention to detail was amazing. From the clover themed interior, to the color scheme inside and out, to the shock tower modifications to keep the upper control arms from hitting the shock tower… all things that made this car more than just a brightly painted Civic.

Not only was I impressed with the car, but Chris himself was an awesome dude. He really lived up to his screen name. He is a really unique, dedicated guy, and builds his car for all the right reasons.

So, congratulations dude, we can’t wait to see it in print!

If you guys want to get a copy, or get a subscription (I would, its a super dope magazine, and these guys support what we’re doing, too) then hit the site up… www.s3mag.com

Around the time that Import Reactor came around, I had only been in Houston for a few months. Still, I had caught wind of the event. I had heard the name mentioned, seen the head counts posted on the boards, and saw the excitement at meets when everyone discussed it. I knew it was a big event, and I was definitely excited to go. For reasons unknown to me, our local forum does not allow discussion of Import Reactor, so the only real information I heard was passed along by word of mouth.

Well, fully expecting a big car meet, I was quite surprised when I was told the week prior to the event that Import Reactor was held during an anime convention. Yes, Import Reactor is a small portion of the Anime Matsuri convention held every year in The Woodlands, TX. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but with my camera gear packed up and ready, batteries charged, and extra sunscreen in my pocket, I knew I was ready for anything.

When I finally arrived at the event, I was blown away by the crowds. Seeing the masses of people swarming towards the hotel convention center definitely got my hopes up, knowing that the venue was going to be packed. Unfortunately, it also got me a parking space a mile away. As I walked up the stairs to the main entrance way, I noticed the people around me… most were younger, with all sorts of costumes, hair color, and various outfits ranging from mild to wild. Wow, these kids take this anime shit seriously!

I got to the booth, paid my entrance fee, and began walking towards the door. I looked down to check my telephone, and ran smack into another person trying to enter at the same time. I looked up apologetically, fully expecting to be helping a young asian girl with pink hair color up after knocking her down. To my surprise, I was face to face with some sort of masked mechanical warrior. To my even bigger surprise, he was holding a hand made 6 foot long gatling gun of some sort. Damn, these anime kids really do take this shit seriously. I apologized to the young man / woman / robot and made my way into the building. I chuckled as the idiot in the robot outfit got stopped and interrogated for his weaponry – shouldn’t have been so creative when you welded that gun up, dumbass!

The event was wild. You know, I wish I could tell you what the hell was going on, but I honestly have no idea. Those kids, dressed in all kinds of crazy shit, were packed like sardines inside the building, patiently waiting in multiple lines to get through doors that lead to rooms full of more kids dressed in crazy shit. I spent two days there, and I still can’t tell you what the hell they were waiting for, as I never had the patience to stand in line for hours.

I cut through the crowd and made my way to the parking garage – finally, the car show! As I entered the top level, I was surprised by the turnout. It wasn’t quite as large as I had expected, unfortunately. This was due to another event going on the same day (an event that is constantly hosting their events on the same day as other events… shame on you, bastards, I’ve seen you do this in multiple states). Fortunately, a couple of the most loyal teams in Houston decided to make it out to Import Reactor and show, to support the home town shown and not the big, national corporate giant. I won’t name that company, but it starts with “H” …. and ends with “ot Import Nights”.

While the turnout eventually did grow as more cars rolled in, it wasn’t the number of cars, or the quality of cars that impressed me, but the atmosphere. The music was blaring (a mix of club music and jdm techno mess, wild!), the import models were out, all the crews were out showing like champs. It was a good time, and although the competition was fierce, it was friendly. There was no drama, and I saw alot of friendship between teams. Good sportsmanship is what its about. It seems like everyone there was proud to be representing the Houston scene, instead of selling out to the big show out in Austin, Texas.

I was really impressed by some of the entertainment there. Initial D arcade machines were lined up for head to head competition. Guest DJs made their way out to keep the people moving and partying. Strong Machine 1 & 2 came out and did a performance – I can’t even begin to explain, just look them up on youtube… its crazy! Even Houston’s very own dance crew, “SoReal Cru” (they were on America’s Best Dance Crew on MTV) came out and did a live performance!

It really was a blast. In summary, I’d have to say that its not about the number of cars, the amount of people, and the number of trophies. Its about the atmosphere, the friendly competition, showing support to your scene, and having a good time. Even though it wasn’t a huge, commercial event with tons of vendors, all the big names, and the biggest trophies, and all that jazz…. it had a good enough atmosphere to make it one of the best car show experiences I’ve had.

Here in Houston the majority of the quality imports you run into at events, shows, and meets are usually on a team. Its definitely not a bad thing, many teams go way beyond car clubs. They tend to be very tightly knit, often displaying a family attitude towards each other. Also, you find that the encouragement, support, and input from the team pushes each team member to go that much farther in modifying their car to stand out from the pack. These are the guys creating trends, and putting fresh ideas and looks out on the streets everyday.

With that sort of enthusiasm comes competition. Not to point fingers, but you’d be foolish to think that drama between teams doesn’t exist. Its there, it happens all the time. This tends to create a bit of seclusion between teams, keeping them to themselves and doing their own thing.

Well, someone decided to change that, and thats how Houston’s All Team Bash was started! The event encourages all teams to get together, come out, and barbeque and have fun at the park. All teams are invited, and generally, all teams show up. You rarely see that sort of “coming together” from the scene, and its amazing when it does happen..

I showed up at the event, and looking around, I noticed all the familiar cars that I know from each team. Everyone had their firepits and barbeques going, their chairs and tens set up, etc. It was alot of fun, a great atmosphere. It wasn’t like a meet, where people huddle in their own little groups and avoid each other – people were coming and going, getting to know each other, hanging out, and overall having a good time.

So, to the guys who put the All Team Bash together – good work! This is what the scene is all about.
